Gaviota Coast Concervancy Citrus Glean
Date
Fri, Aug 21
Time
9:30 AM – 12:30 PM
Location
Rancho Tajiguas Preserve
Come glean oranges with Veggie Rescue and Gaviota Coast Conservancy! We’ll be harvesting fruit and donating it to our partner organizations serving individuals experiencing food insecurity. No prior experience is needed, just a willingness to lend a hand. We’d love to have you join us for a fun, meaningful day of community care! Directions: We will meet at the Rancho Tajiguas Entrance Gate: GPS Coordinates: 34.465529, -120.098921 From the gate, we’ll drive to the orange orchard. Additional directions to the entrance gate: From Santa Barbara (Highway 101 North): About two miles west of Refugio Canyon, turn right at the at-grade crossing marked by a “crossing” symbol. The turn comes up quickly, so please be prepared. From the West (heading toward Santa Barbara): Approximately 3.5 miles past Arroyo Hondo Preserve, exit from the left lane. Use caution—let faster traffic pass before merging into the left turn lane. Cross the highway safely when clear. After turning, proceed right onto Calle Real (the frontage road). Pass the first driveway on your left (about 100 yards in), and continue as Calle Real veers left up the canyon (do not continue straight uphill). Shortly thereafter, you’ll arrive at the brown ranch gate, where we’ll meet and caravan in together.
Veggie Rescue has partnered with Tom Shepherd to create Shepherd’s Giving Farm, a 20-acre certified organic farm nestled in the Santa Ynez River Valley just outside of Buellton, with a single purpose: grow food and give it all away. Every crop grown and harvested at Shepherd's Giving Farm is passed directly to Veggie Rescue, who then distributes it at no cost to over 70 local nonprofit partners across Santa Barbara County. Those partners serve the people who need fresh food most: families, seniors, people in recovery, immigrants, unhoused individuals, and children. Nothing leaves the farm for profit. The entire operation exists to move fresh, organic food from the ground to the people who need it. Therefore, Shepherd's Giving Farm relies on a growing network of volunteers and community groups, especially during planting and harvest seasons.
