State service commission
Maryland’s governor-appointed service commission is Department of Service and Civic Innovation. It administers AmeriCorps funding in the state and is the place to look for statewide service programmes and grants.
Student service hours
Maryland is the only state that requires community service to graduate. Under COMAR 13A.03.02.05 every public school student must complete at least 75 hours of student service-learning — a requirement in force since autumn 1993, the first of its kind in the country. It does not apply to home instruction or private schools. Official guidance.
Minimum ages to volunteer are set by each organization rather than by state law — commonly 14 to 16, and usually with a parent or guardian’s consent under 18. Child labour rules govern paid work, not volunteering. Ask the organization directly.
