Volunteering in Illinois

State service commission

Illinois’s governor-appointed service commission is Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service (Serve Illinois). It administers AmeriCorps funding in the state and is the place to look for statewide service programmes and grants.

Student service hours

Illinois sets no statewide community service requirement for high school graduation. Individual districts may set their own, and many award elective credit for service — check with the school district.

Minimum ages to volunteer are set by each organization rather than by state law — commonly 14 to 16, and usually with a parent or guardian’s consent under 18. Child labour rules govern paid work, not volunteering. Ask the organization directly.
