State service commission
District Of Columbia’s governor-appointed service commission is Mayor's Office on Volunteerism and Partnerships (Serve DC). It administers AmeriCorps funding in the state and is the place to look for statewide service programmes and grants.
Student service hours
The District requires 100 hours of community service to graduate, for the class of 2026 onward, phased back in from 2022–23. Hours count when they are unpaid service for a 501(c)(3), a school, or a government agency, and must be documented on a signed form. The State Board is currently considering reducing the requirement to 60 hours and broadening it to 'community engagement'. Official guidance.
Minimum ages to volunteer are set by each organization rather than by state law — commonly 14 to 16, and usually with a parent or guardian’s consent under 18. Child labour rules govern paid work, not volunteering. Ask the organization directly.
