What is your volunteer program actually worth?

A defensible dollar figure you can show your board, calculated with the Independent Sector hourly rate. Takes about 30 seconds.

How this is calculated

Annual value = volunteers × hours each gives per year × the national hourly value of volunteer time. We use the 2024 Independent Sector, Value of Volunteer Time rate — $33.49 per hour, the most recent figure Independent Sector has published — the same citation researchers, journalists, and grant reports use, so a board member or funder can trace the number back to its source rather than taking your word for it.

Full-time equivalent (FTE) divides total volunteer hours by 2,080 hours/year (40 hours × 52 weeks — the US Bureau of Labor Statistics' standard work year), the usual way to translate volunteer contribution into a headcount comparison a board already understands.

Worked example

50 volunteers giving 50 hours a year each is 2,500 total hours. At $33.49/hour, that's $83,725 of delivered value a year — equivalent to 1.2 full-time staff positions.

What the result represents: a defensible, third-party-sourced estimate of the paid-labor equivalent of your volunteers' time — useful for board reports and grant applications, not an audited financial figure.
